The Muck

The Muck: A 3D Setting Model

by Caroline Lunger

I created a 3D model of "the Muck" on the Everglades rich and fertile soil. It was constructed of a cardboard box that was first painted with an elaborate backdrop and then covered in fresh flowers and produce (peas and blueberries). Janie and Tea Cakes "shack" is made out of cardboard, hot glue gun, and paint. There is a pea field made of fresh halved sugar snap peas. The tree is made of cardboard and various leaves from plants around me house :) I clipped all the flowers and herbs form our indoor flower vases and pots as well. The clouds on the top are fabric stuffing and the lake is painted with aqua tones. The tone is laid back and relaxing, just like a nice summer evening Janie and Tea Cake would spend outdoors with their friends. Yet this setting is lively and free portraying Janie and Tea Cake's happy life in the muck. Their shack has a rustic look, nothing fancy like Janie's old life. My two symbols are the horizon and the fertile land. The horizon symbolizes Janie's idealistic views on life and nature. She often refers to the horizon in the book, as something she is reaching towards in life. The fertile land symbolizes Janie and Tea Cakes new, prosperous, happy life together. There in the Everglades, their life is full of freedom, surprises, and prosperity. All around them is abundant wild vegetation and plants. The setting is colorful and bright, being the days where all things were going good and alright in the Everglades for Tea Cake and Janie. - Caroline
